When to come to Ruaha

Dry season (June to October): This is generally the best time for wildlife viewing in Ruaha National Park. As water sources become limited, animals gather around rivers and remaining waterholes, making them easier to spot. The vegetation is thinner, improving visibility and creating excellent opportunities to see elephants, lions, leopards, and other wildlife.

Green season (November to May): The green season transforms Ruaha into a lush landscape filled with fresh vegetation, seasonal wildflowers, and beautiful scenery. It is particularly rewarding for birdwatching, photography, and enjoying the park’s quieter atmosphere. Although some wildlife may be harder to spot because of thicker vegetation and seasonal water sources, this period offers a different and equally memorable safari experience.

Activities

  • Game drives: Explore Ruaha’s expansive wilderness on guided game drives through open savannahs, woodland, and river valleys. These excursions offer opportunities to spot elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Early morning and late afternoon drives are particularly rewarding for wildlife viewing and photography.

  • Guided Walking Safaris Experience the African bush on foot with an authorized guide and ranger. Walking safaris reveal details often missed from a vehicle, including animal tracks, medicinal plants, insects, birds, and smaller wildlife. It is an exciting way to understand the park’s ecosystem while learning about the relationship between animals, plants, and their environment.

  • Birdwatching Ruaha is an exceptional destination for bird enthusiasts, with more than 570 recorded bird species. Explore riverbanks, open plains, and woodlands in search of colorful bee-eaters, hornbills, kingfishers, eagles, and other fascinating species. The green season is especially rewarding when migratory birds arrive and the landscape becomes vibrant with life.

  • Wildlife Viewing Along the Great Ruaha River Spend time exploring the banks of the Great Ruaha River, one of the park’s most important wildlife habitats. During the dry season, shrinking water sources attract elephants, buffaloes, predators, and numerous birds. You may also spot hippos and crocodiles in suitable river pools, making this area a highlight for wildlife observation.
